SUMMARY:ONLINE: REQUIEM
DESCRIPTION:Largely considered as one of the most important verdian vocal-symphonic work\, the Requiem was composed to honour the memory of the poet and dramatist Alessandro Manzoni (1785-1873)\, the \,\,soul of the italian literature” who\, similar to Verdi\, stood through his work of art\, for italian unification and independency. \nThe idea of composing a Requiem was linked initally by the death of another important italian cultural personality: Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) – one of the most appreciated and notorious opera creator during the middle of the 19th century. Learning about his passing away\, Giuseppe Verdi proposed that the Requiem in his memory would be written by some of the main italian composers. Although his initiative was well-received and the components of the Mass for Rossini were successfully finished\, the performance of the work at the scheduled date did not take place due to financial and logistical reasons. Libera me – Verdi’s segment of the mass found its place\, later\, in Messa da requiem per l’anniversario della morte di Manzoni 22 maggio 1874\, as the last of the seven parts: Requiem\, Dies irae\, Offertorio\, Sanctus\, Agnus Dei\, Lux aeterna\, Libera me respectively. \nThe Requiem was permiered\, according to the categorical wish of the composer\, at the St. Mark Basilica in Venice\, one year after Manzoni’s death – May 22nd\, 1874 – under his baton. Albeit the applauses were forbidden inside the Dome\, the enchantment was perceivable from all sides. Teatro alla Scala\, Paris Opéra Comique and London Royal Albert Hall concerts followed\, as some of the stages on which the message about death\, judgement\, salvation\, resurrection and the music expressiveness had a huge public impact.
