SUMMARY:ONLINE: AIDA
DESCRIPTION:Opera in four acts on a libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni\, after a short story by Auguste Mariette-Bey \nThe opera Aida was composed in 1870 and opens the final trilogy of Giuseppe Verdi’s operas\, followed by Othello and Falstaff. It is based on a short story written by the French Egyptologist scholar Auguste Mariette – the first director of the Cairo Museum\, honored with the title of Bey. In the spring of 1869\, the short story was handed to the French writer Camille du Locle\, charged with the mission to contact one of the great composers of the time\, and write on its basis an opera dedicated to the Egyptian people\, with a strong national character\, meant to be part of the events organized for inauguration of the Suez Canal. \nHowever\, the opening of the opera Aida was rescheduled\, because Verdi accepted the proposal of Egyptian authorities only in May of 1870. The preparations lasted just four months\, and the first\, extremely successful performance took place on 24 December 1871\, on the stage of the Opera of Cairo. \nThe subject of the work integrates Romantic topics – such as the fight for freedom or the death-defying love. But the action – built around the slave Aida (in reality\, an Ethiopian princess) and the brave Radames\, whose love survives despite continuous political threats and princess Amneris’ jealousy – takes place this time in the exotic environment of the ancient Egypt. \nThe musical-choreographic journey offers listeners the chance to enjoy the glory and grandeur of scenes taking place in the royal palace from the capital of the Empire\, where the King of Egypt and his suite are honored by ample orchestra sounds\, majestic choruses and dances\, but also the intimacy of night scenes in which Aida and Radames confess their love\, the feeling they eventually both validate through the supreme sacrifice. \nVerdi’s composition holds a special place in the repertory of our institution\, not just because of its undeniable value. The opening of Aida from 25 May 1920 also marked the inauguration of the National Opera of Cluj! \nThe performance has three breaks and ends around 10.30 p.m.
