SUMMARY:REQUIEM
DESCRIPTION:Considered one of Giuseppe Verdi’s most important vocal-symphonic works\, the Requiem was composed to honor the memory of the poet\, playwright\, and novelist Alessandro Manzoni (1785-1873)\, “the soul of national literature\,” who\, like the Italian composer\, advocated for the unification of Italy through his art. \nVerdi’s idea to compose a Requiem initially stemmed from the death of another prominent figure in Italian culture: composer Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) – the most appreciated and famous opera creator in mid-19th century Italy. Upon hearing of Rossini’s passing\, Verdi proposed creating a Requiem\, to which some of Italy’s leading composers would contribute. Although the initiative was well received and the parts of the work were completed\, the performance of the Requiem for Rossini on the scheduled date – November 13\, 1869 – did not take place due to financial and organizational issues. However\, Libera me\, the segment Verdi composed for this occasion\, would later find its place in the Messa da requiem per l’anniversario della morte di Manzoni on May 22\, 1874\, as the final part of the seven sections: Requiem\, Dies irae\, Offertorio\, Sanctus\, Agnus Dei\, Lux aeterna\, and Libera me. \nThe Requiem was first performed\, at Verdi’s explicit request\, at the San Marco Basilica in Venice\, one year after Manzoni’s death\, on May 22\, 1874\, conducted by Verdi himself. Although applause was forbidden inside the basilica\, the delight of the audience was felt throughout. Subsequent concerts followed at Teatro alla Scala\, the Opéra Comique in Paris\, and the Royal Albert Hall in London\, where the themes of death\, judgment\, salvation\, resurrection\, and the emotional power of the work made a profound impact on the audience. \nWe invite you to an uplifting performance that will enlighten your spirit! \nRecommended age: 5+ \nThe concert has no intermission and will conclude around 8:00 PM.
