The original choreography was created by Rostislav Zakharov\, and the world premiere took place in 1934 at the Kirov Theatre (then Leningrad). \nThe ballet’s narrative draws inspiration from the legend of the Fountain of Tears in the palace of the Tatar khans in Bakhchisarai\, the former capital of Crimea. According to the legend\, Khan Ghirei\, a powerful and unyielding ruler\, falls in love with the beautiful Maria\, a Polish princess taken captive during a raid. His impossible love\, Maria’s rejection\, and the jealousy of his favorite\, Zarema\, unfold into a deeply tragic drama\, where passion turns into death and sorrow into eternity. \nThrough dance\, The Fountain of Bakhchisarai captures the contrast between two worlds—the mysterious\, passionate East and the serene\, pure Europe.
