SUMMARY:THE BARBER OF SEVILLE
DESCRIPTION:Opera in three acts on a libretto by Cesare Sterbini\, based on Pierre Beaumarchais’ play Le Barbier de Séville \nRecommended Age: 7+ \nOne of the most comical\, animated\, and long-awaited operas ever written\, Gioachino Rossini’s The Barber of Seville always cheers our performance hall and is met\, at each presentation\, with roaring applause by the public of Cluj. \nThe performance again brings Figaro\, the humorous\, courageous\, and romantic Spanish barber\, on stage\, who gives a charming touch to the love story between the restless Count Almaviva and beautiful Rosina. Gioachino Rossini’s work had had huge success ever since its 1816 absolute premiere when it opened with the initial\, otherwise suggestive title of Almaviva (The Useless Precaution). The funny barber is even now topping the bills of opera theatres worldwide. \nIn the enchanting and colorful 18th-century Seville\, Figaro is the barber loved by the entire city\, who helps fulfill Rosina and Count Almaviva’s great love. However\, there is a huge challenge\, because Rosina is also chased by her old tutor\, Bartolo\, who has the advantage of being helped by Basilio\, the young woman’s music teacher. \nThe opera’s atmosphere of love and humor is given by the multiple tricks that Count Almaviva and Figaro resort to to approach the beautiful lover and declare their love. The final scene\, where Figaro and the Count enter Rosina’s house at midnight\, climbing on her balcony-propped stairs\, provides a more passionate air to the three-act bouffe masterpiece. Rosina’s heart experiences the utmost joy when Almaviva bends on his knees to offer his love\, wealth\, and name. The ardent declaration is also joined by teacher Basilio\, bribed by Bartolo’s adversaries\, who becomes a witness to the lovers’ marriage. The old and glum Barolo arrives too late to stop their union and is only consoled by the fact that he gets to keep Rosina’s dowry\, which Almaviva has given up. \nThe performance has two breaks and ends around 10.00 p.m. \nThe performance is in Italian with Romanian supertitles.

SUMMARY:PREMIERE: ONE BORN FROM A TEAR
DESCRIPTION:OPERA APERTA INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL 2026 \nThe Romanian National Opera Cluj-Napoca & The Ambassador Children’s Musical Theatre invite you to discover a captivating reinterpretation of the classic fairy tale One born from a tear (Făt Frumos din Lacrimă) by Mihai Eminescu\, reimagined in the dynamic rhythms of rock opera. \nOne born from a tear is Romania’s first modern rock opera\, composed by Dan Spînu\, with a libretto adapted by Ramona Cojocaru and Sabina Ciocîrlie after Eminescu’s original tale. Since its premiere in 2014\, the work has stood out through its remarkable stylistic fusion—rarely encountered in the Romanian musical landscape—between pop-rock energy and the expressive language of Romantic and Impressionist opera. \nFor the first time in a decade of successful performances—previously presented with an English libretto— One born from a tear will now be performed in Romanian\, on the stage of the Romanian National Opera Cluj-Napoca\, as part of the International Opera Aperta Festival. \nAudiences will discover a story shaped by complex characters\, moving beyond the familiar stereotypes of fairy tales (the flawless hero\, the passive\, waiting heroine)\, unfolding instead like a modern historical film\, enriched with subtle touches of humor. Alongside the symphonic orchestra and mixed choir\, the performance brings together a rock band and a cast of nine soloists performing in a pop/rock style. The composer envisioned a musical language that balances the sophistication of the operatic stage with the accessibility of pop-rock genres\, through memorable melodic lines while maintaining a high level of vocal performance. \nRecommended age: 7+

SUMMARY:Jesus Christ Superstar
DESCRIPTION:OPERA APERTA INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL 2026 \nOn Thursday\, 25 June\, at 8:30 PM\, the International Opera Aperta Festival 2026 presents Jesus Christ Superstar\, the rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber\, with lyrics by Tim Rice\, on the Main Stage in Unirii Square. \nConceived as a fully sung-through work\, Jesus Christ Superstar is inspired by the biblical accounts of the Passion\, presented through a modern stage interpretation. The story follows the final days of Jesus\, focusing on the tensions between the characters and\, in particular\, on the perspective of Judas\, portrayed as a complex figure caught in an inner conflict over the direction taken by Jesus’ mission. \nThrough its rock musical language and lyrics that include contemporary references\, Jesus Christ Superstar brings the biblical narrative into an expressive framework different from that of classical musical theatre. The work deliberately uses anachronisms\, stylistic contrasts\, and references to modern sensibilities\, allowing for a direct stage approach to themes such as faith\, power\, and responsibility. \nAdmission is free. \nRecommended age: 7+ \nThe International Opera Aperta Festival is organised with the support of the Ministry of Culture\, the Cluj-Napoca City Hall\, the Cluj-Napoca Local Council\, the Cluj County Council\, and the “Opera 2 You” Association.

SUMMARY:SAX AT MIDNIGHT
DESCRIPTION:OPERA APERTA INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL 2026 \nOn Friday\, 26 June\, at 11:59 PM\, the International Opera Aperta Festival 2026 presents SAX AT MIDNIGHT\, a concert for saxophone and piano held at “Avram Iancu” Cluj International Airport. \nThe event proposes a nocturnal format\, held in an unconventional space\, in which chamber repertoire is presented outside the traditional concert hall. Entitled From Paris to New York\, the programme follows two important directions in the history of the saxophone: the instrument’s connection with the French musical space\, where it was invented and gradually integrated into the classical repertoire\, and its closeness to the language of American music\, especially through the influence of jazz and the urban sonorities of the 20th century. \nThe concert will be performed by Duo Sax\, made up of Gaetano Di Bacco on saxophone and Giuliano Mazzoccante on piano. The two artists propose a programme featuring works by Darius Milhaud\, Roger Boutry\, Paul Creston\, Toshio Mashima\, George Gershwin\, and Roberto Molinelli. The repertoire moves through different styles\, from French writing of the first half of the 20th century to South American influences\, jazz\, American music\, and works built around the soundscape of New York. \nThe programme includes Darius Milhaud’s Scaramouche\, Roger Boutry’s Divertimento\, Paul Creston’s Sonata\, Toshio Mashima’s Seagull for Alto Saxophone and Piano\, Rhapsody in Blue Fantasy\, after George Gershwin\, and Tango Club from Roberto Molinelli’s cycle Four Pictures from New York. Through this selection\, the concert highlights the versatility of the saxophone\, an instrument capable of functioning both in a lyrical and chamber register\, as well as in rhythmic\, virtuosic\, or jazz-influenced areas. \nSAX AT MIDNIGHT is presented by Wens Travel and “Avram Iancu” Cluj International Airport. \nThe event has no interval and is expected to end around 1:00 AM. \nTickets are available on the bilete.ro platform. \nRecommended age: 12+ \nThe International Opera Aperta Festival is organised with the support of the Ministry of Culture\, the Cluj-Napoca City Hall\, the Cluj-Napoca Local Council\, the Cluj County Council\, and the “Opera 2 You” Association.

SUMMARY:THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE-DAME
DESCRIPTION:OPERA APERTA INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL 2026 \nOn Saturday\, 27 June\, at 8:30 PM\, the International Opera Aperta Festival 2026 presents The Hunchback of Notre-Dame\, a ballet performance by Slovak Dance Theatre\, on the Main Stage in Unirii Square. \nThe performance proposes a contemporary interpretation of Victor Hugo’s novel\, choreographed and directed by Ján Ďurovčík. The production does not follow a classical retelling of the story\, but places the action in an imagined Paris of the near future\, around the year 2050. This perspective is supported by the costumes created by designer Lukáš Krnáč and by the visual concept of Notre-Dame Cathedral\, presented in a modern and futuristic light. \nAt the centre of the performance is Quasimodo\, the bell-ringer of the cathedral\, isolated from the world and forced to watch life from the heights of Notre-Dame’s towers. His relationship with Esmeralda becomes the main focus of the dramatic construction\, alongside the tensions generated by Frollo and the Captain of the Guard. The production also introduces a symbolic character\, the alter ego of Quasimodo’s mother\, who accompanies him throughout the action and intervenes at key moments in the story. \nThe music of the performance is composed by Henrich Leško\, and the production premiered on 27 March 2025 at JANART Theatre in Bratislava. Through its choreographic language\, visual construction\, and updated narrative framework\, the performance brings to the forefront themes such as marginalisation\, power\, desire\, compassion\, and the relationship between the individual and society. \nSlovak Dance Theatre is the only professional company of its kind in Slovakia\, founded by choreographer Ján Ďurovčík. For more than two decades\, the company has presented dance theatre performances on stages in Slovakia and abroad\, with appearances in cities such as Tokyo\, London\, Beijing\, New York\, Madrid\, Rome\, Vancouver\, and Toronto. \nThe event is expected to end around 9:45 PM.

SUMMARY:AIDA - GIUSEPPE VERDI
DESCRIPTION:OPERA APERTA INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL 2026 \nOpera performance presented by the Romanian National Opera in Cluj-Napoca – Powered by ING \nOpera in four acts\, on a libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni\, after a story by Auguste Mariette \nIn the late 1860s\, Giuseppe Verdi was facing increasing difficulties in finding suitable librettos for his new works. A particularly active collaborator in this process was the French librettist and impresario Camille Du Locle\, with whom Verdi had previously worked on Don Carlos. Du Locle offered the composer a series of thematic suggestions\, ranging from comic subjects that would have continued the tradition opened by Un ballo in maschera\, to grand themes that could be adapted to the conventions of grand opera. \nA decisive moment came in early 1870\, when Du Locle presented Verdi with a scenario written by the archaeologist and Egyptologist Auguste Mariette\, based on a fictional story set in ancient Egypt. Although\, a year earlier\, Verdi had refused to compose an inaugural hymn for the opening festivities of the Suez Canal\, he accepted this new proposal\, intended for the inauguration of the new Cairo Opera House. For the libretto\, Verdi chose Antonio Ghislanzoni\, with whom he had previously collaborated on the revision of La forza del destino. \nThe creative process continued throughout 1870\, with Verdi exercising his usual close control over the shaping of the libretto\, intervening even in matters of detail such as the length and wording of the verses. Aida eventually premiered in Cairo at the end of 1871\, under the baton of Giovanni Bottesini. The cast included Eleonora Grossi as Amneris\, Antonietta Anastasi-Pozzoni as Aida\, Pietro Mongini as Radamès\, and Francesco Steller as Amonasro\, and the performance enjoyed considerable success. \nVerdi subsequently paid particular attention to the Italian premiere\, held at Teatro alla Scala in Milan. He made small revisions to the score and carefully supervised the rehearsals of a cast selected with great care. This second performance\, conducted by Franco Faccio\, took place on 8 February 1872 and featured Maria Waldmann as Amneris\, Teresa Stolz as Aida\, Giuseppe Fancelli as Radamès\, and Francesco Pandolfini as Amonasro. \nAlthough the performance was enthusiastically received by the audience\, some critical voices pointed to passages they considered conventional or outdated. For this reason\, Verdi remained cautious about authorising further performances in Italy\, insisting on the need for a rigorous staging. Nevertheless\, from the 1870s onward\, Aida firmly established itself in the international operatic repertoire\, a status it has retained to this day. \nThe subject of the opera brings together Romantic themes such as the struggle for freedom and love that defies death. The action centres on Aida\, an enslaved woman who is in fact an Ethiopian princess\, and the warrior Radamès\, whose love survives despite constant political threats and the jealousy of Princess Amneris. Their story unfolds against the exotic background of ancient Egypt. \nThe performance is sung in Italian\, with Romanian surtitles. \nPlease note that the performance includes intense lighting effects\, sudden changes of light\, and special effects\, which may be uncomfortable for some audience members. \nRecommended age: 12+ \nThe performance has two intervals and is expected to end around midnight. \nThe International Opera Aperta Festival is organised with the support of the Ministry of Culture\, the Cluj-Napoca City Hall\, the Cluj-Napoca Local Council\, the Cluj County Council\, and the “Opera 2 You” Association.
