SUMMARY:DON GIOVANNI
DESCRIPTION:Opera in two acts\, with a libretto in Italian by Lorenzo da Ponte \nThe action of Don Giovanni takes place in Seville\, Spain\, and follows the destiny of the legendary seducer Don Giovanni—a fascinating\, impulsive\, and charismatic figure whose immoral deeds inevitably lead him to a tragic end. Masterfully blending tragedy and comedy\, the work brings to the forefront unforgettable characters such as Donna Elvira\, marked by suffering and inner conflict\, and Leporello\, Don Giovanni’s servant\, whose sharp and flavorful situational humor provides a vivid counterpoint to the drama. \nThe opera premiered in 1787 in Prague\, conducted by the composer himself\, and has since established itself as one of the absolute masterpieces of the universal operatic repertoire. Admired for the complexity of its musical construction and the psychological depth of its characters\, Don Giovanni continues to captivate audiences through the timeless relevance of its themes and the expressive power of its music. \nThe performance includes one intermission and ends at approximately 10:00 PM. \nThe performance is sung in Italian\, with Romanian surtitles. \nRecommended age: 12+

SUMMARY:NABUCCO
DESCRIPTION:Opera in four acts on a libretto by Temistocle Solera\, inspired by the play Nabuchodonosor by Auguste Anicet-Bourgeois and Francis Cornu and the ballet Nabucodonosor by Antonio Cortesi \nBesides the impressive composing skills particularly exerted in the lyric genre\, Giuseppe Verdi (1813 – 1901) – “l’italianissimo” – was famed during his life for his creative excellence and the revolutionary\, patriotic attitude\, as a distinguished supporter of the fight for the unification of Italian states. Of all the operas that reflect his militant attitude\, Nabucco has a special resonance. After the relative success of the first two operas presented on the stage of the Scala Theatre of Milano and after successive losses of family members in just two years (1838 – 1840)\, Giuseppe Verdi had given up the idea of ever composing. However\, he was deeply moved by Temistocle Solera’s libretto\, inspired by the Old Testament and\, implicitly\, by the praying verses which would later form the chorus of Jewish slaves – Va pensiero\, sull’ali dorate –\, which determined him to return to his creative art. Throughout 1841\, Verdi composed the opera Nabucodonosor\, which would open at Scala in the following year\, on 9 March\, marking the beginning of an undoubtedly bright artistic career and setting a popularity record that still holds to these days. \nThe subject follows\, throughout the four acts\, the evolution of the Jewish people’s condition – from oppression to freedom – but also the evolution of emperor Nabucodonosor’s attitude – first arrogance\, then humility – regarding the Almighty God. Ina Hudea’s directing vision is faithful to the original dramaturgical conception\, while Liliana Moraru’s scenography displays its spatial component in a modern\, contemporary context. \nThe performance has one break and ends around 9.00 p.m. \nThe performance is interpreted in Italian with Romanian supertitles. \nRecommended age: 7+

SUMMARY:The Byzantine Easter Oratorio – The Passion and Resurrection of the Lord
DESCRIPTION:The Byzantine Easter Oratorio – The Passion and Resurrection of the Lord is one of the most important creations of the Romanian composer Paul Constantinescu and a masterpiece of 20th-century Romanian art music. Conceived between 1943 and 1946\, the work is part of the composer’s sustained effort to valorize the Romanian Byzantine tradition\, integrated into a refined and highly expressive musical language. \nThe oratorio is based on liturgical texts from the Orthodox services of Holy Week and Easter\, drawn from the Gospels\, the Triodion\, and the Pentecostarion. It is constructed as a vast musical fresco that follows\, in symbolic and theological order\, the essential moments of the Passion\, Crucifixion\, and Resurrection of the Savior. \nThrough the expressive power of its musical language\, The Byzantine Easter Oratorio transcends the boundaries of a purely religious work\, asserting itself as a synthesis of tradition and modernity\, spirituality and art. The composition occupies a fundamental place in Romania’s musical heritage and remains a major landmark of Romanian culture in the 20th century. \nRecommended age: 7+

SUMMARY:CARMEN
DESCRIPTION:Opera in four acts with a libretto by Henry Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy\, based on the novella of the same name by Prosper Mérimée. \nThe last and most important of the works of the French composer Georges Bizet (1838-1875)\, Carmen enjoyed increasing recognition\, despite the hostility and harsh criticism it faced on the premiere evening (June 3\, 1875) at the Opéra Comique in Paris. The desire of Camille du Locle – the manager of the institution at that time – to “evolve the genre” thus materialized in a work of unprecedented realism\, which portrays the tragic story of the soldier Don José\, ensnared by the charms of the gypsy Carmen. Although he defies his family\, compromises his career\, and exceeds all moral boundaries for the woman he loves\, the soldier will ultimately end up killing her.\nIt becomes evident why such a subject took the Parisian public by surprise\, accustomed to the convenience and easily conquered by the amusing plays with happy endings\, ubiquitous in the repertoire of opera theater at that time. However\, the genius with which Bizet captured the dramatic evolution\, the seductive melodies of the famous Habanera\, Seguidilla\, or the Toreador’s Song\, the pronounced Spanish accent\, and the French lyricism of some moments received later\, the deserved appreciation\, winning even today the thunderous applause of spectators worldwide. \nThe performance has three intermissions and ends around 10:30 p.m. \nThe performance is interpreted in French with Romanian supertitles. \nRecommended age: 7+

SUMMARY:A MASKED BALL
DESCRIPTION:Opera in three acts (libretto by Antonio Somma\, based on Eugéne Scribe’s Gustav the Third) \nUn ballo in Maschera found itself for the first time in the spotlight on Apollo’s Theatre stage in Rome\, becoming famous not just as an operatic masterpiece\, but also due to its controversial libretto\, based on the tragic story of King Gustav the Third of Sweden\, which also brought the work under the censorship effects for a long period. \nThe historical setting is centered upon Riccardo – Count of Warwick\, his truthful friend Renato\, and his wife\, Amelia\, caught in between the two men’s love. The medieval story is fascinating because of its passion and intrigue\, the sanctity of friendship and honor\, the pain as a consequence of hidden love triangles\, and betrayal that\, without masque\, will always require huge costs in exchange. This Verdian production of The Romanian National Opera in Cluj-Napoca keeps its classic essence\, the characters\, decor\, and stage directions’ original nature\, looking forward to a natural rendering of the whole action\, but also of the intense feelings of its heroes. \nWe are expecting you to discover what lies beyond the elegant masks in a legendary opera! \nThe performance is interpreted in Italian with a supratitration in Romanian. \nThe performance has two intermissions and ends around 9.30 p.m. \nRecommended Age: 7+

SUMMARY:THE OLD MAN'S DAUGHTER AND THE OLD WOMAN'S DAUGHTER
DESCRIPTION:Operetta in an act (3 paintings). The show reminiscent of  Ion Creangă\, brimming with momentum in childhood\, fascinates the small spectators at once\, in a fairy tale set on notes\, which gives birth to the most unexpected characters. Adapted from the operetta “The Hardworking Old Man’s Daughter “\, written in 1982 by the composer Florin Comișel\, the show is based on the libretto of Cezar Țipa\, who was inspired by the popular story characters from two other famous fairy tales\, “Puss in Boots” and “Capra cu trei iezi”\, arousing\, even more\, the curiosity and joy of the little ones. \nThe heroine of the operetta\, Ilenuța\, the girl of the old man\, candid and modest\, teaches us how kindness\, hard work\, patience\, and seriousness are values that help us to have a beautiful life\, with noble aims. At the opposite pole\, Marhiolița\, the old woman’s daughter\, lazy and wicked\, does nothing but intrigue\, remaining ultimately dissatisfied and disappointed. The teachings of the story give birth to an operetta of popular essence\, meant to bring to light the moral values of the Romanian peasant\, in a performance directed by Iulian Ioan Sandu\, successfully doubled in the musical plane by the instrumental arrangement of Flaviu Mogoșan.
