Opera in three acts, with a libretto by Richard Wagner
Inspired by the writings of Heinrich Heine, the work tells the story of the legendary captain cursed to roam the seas for eternity, allowed to set foot on land only once every seven years in the hope of meeting the woman whose devotion can break the spell. A terrible storm brings him into the path of Daland, a Norwegian captain, who invites him to his home to meet his daughter, Senta. The young woman, fascinated by the myth of the Dutchman even before meeting him, recognizes in him the hero of her dreams and offers him her unconditional love.
Their story, woven through dramatic harmonies and powerful orchestral themes, culminates in Senta’s sacrifice, as she chooses to give her life to save him. Her gesture breaks the curse, and the two are finally allowed to be united beyond the limits of the earthly world, in a final image of moving purity.
The Flying Dutchman remains one of Wagner’s most expressive operas, blending the mystery of great legends with the dramatic force of his music to offer audiences an intense and profound experience.
The performance is sung in German with Romanian surtitles.
