OPERA APERTA INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL 2026
On Wednesday, 24 June, at 8:30 PM, the International Opera Aperta Festival 2026 presents TANGO MEETS OPERA, a vocal-instrumental concert held in the inner courtyard of Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca.
The event proposes an encounter between Argentine tango and the vocal expression associated with the operatic stage, through a programme that brings together representative works of the genre, ranging from traditional tango to tango nuevo. The repertoire includes works by Astor Piazzolla, Carlos Gardel, Juan D’Arienzo, Ángel Villoldo, Gerardo Matos Rodríguez, Jacob Gade, and other composers from the history of tango.
The soloists of the concert are mezzo-soprano Iulia Merca and tenor Hector Lopez, artists of the Romanian National Opera in Cluj-Napoca. They will be joined by Cluj Tango Orchestra, an ensemble made up of professional musicians active in musical institutions in Cluj-Napoca, including the Romanian National Opera, the Hungarian Opera, the “Gheorghe Dima” National Academy of Music, and the “Sigismund Toduță” Music College.
Cluj Tango Orchestra consists of Sorin Robert Indrei on bandoneon, Irina Rosana Indrei on piano, Milena Vădan and Sara Vădan on violin, Adrian Lup on cello, and Emanuel Elcean on double bass. This instrumental formula brings to the forefront the specific sonority of Argentine tango, in which the bandoneon plays a central role.
The TANGO MEETS OPERA concept was first presented in Cluj-Napoca in 2025, on the occasion of International Argentine Tango Day, in the presence of the Ambassador of the Argentine Republic to Romania.
The event is organised in partnership with the Romanian National Opera in Cluj-Napoca, with the support of the Embassy of the Argentine Republic in Romania and the Republic of Moldova.
The event is presented by Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca.
The concert has no interval and is expected to end around 10:00 PM.
