Opera performance in 3 acts on a libretto by Salvatore Cammarano, after the novel The bride of Lammermoor by Sir Walter Scott
Incorporating a world separated from Scotland in the 1700s, dominated by ideological and cultic conflicts, Lucia di Lammermoor’s work by Gaetano Donizetti is considered to be one of the most profound, difficult and appreciated creations in the universal lyrical repertoire.
Inspired by Walter Scott’s drama, “Bride of Lammermoor,” Donizetti’s work captures Lucia’s troubled love story, Lord Enrico Ashton’s sister, forced by him at a marriage of convenience, to save the family’s honor. Finding out that Lucia is in love with Edgardo di Ravenswood, the son of the rival family, Enrico makes her believe that her lover was in fact disbeliever. Lucia falls into her brother’s trap and accepts the forced marriage, news that irreversibly hurts Edgardo. Life makes no sense without Lucy’s love, so the lover decides to end her suffering. The bells of the castle are ringing from far away. Lucia died, after killing her new husband, mad with pain. Convinced of the love and faith of his fiancée, Edgardo ended his life with a dagger.
The opera in three acts was represented in the world premiere on September 26, 1835, at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, where it enjoyed a great success. On the stage of the Romanian National Opera in Cluj, Lucia di Lammermoor returned in 2014, after an absence of more than seven years. The hallmark of the Italian romance of this show is conferred both by the booklet at its base and by the artistic vision of the director Mario de Carlo, the one who signed the artistic direction, the decorations and the costumes of the new montage. The show transmits a special spiritual depth, being long acclaimed on the occasion of the premiere and on the occasion of each new performance.
