Musical in two acts

In the 1950s, musicals were booming in the US, and productions like My Fair Lady and Guys and Dolls ran on Broadway for years, with authors and composers always looking for new stories. It was no surprise when, in 1958, the successful team of Rodgers and Hammerstein came across the memoirs of Maria von Trapp and began work on a new musical: The Sound of Music. The Broadway production premiered in 1959 and ran for three years for 1,443 performances, and then in 1960 won five Tony Awards.

An emotional story that focuses on the members of the Von Trapp family, one of the most famous groups of singers in the world in the period immediately before the Second World War. Maria Rainer, coming from an Austrian convent, becomes governess in the house of a widowed sea captain with seven children and brings into the house a new love of life and music. Maria teaches his children to sing and Captain Von Trapp to love, but when the Nazis invade Austria and show up at their door to take Captain Von Trapp, the whole family is forced to flee for safety.

Recommended age: 5 +
