Waste Side Story – A Contemporary Opera Performance as Part of the Grand Opera Pata Rât Project

Libretto by Mara Căruțașu, Music by Dominik Schuster and Tobias Gröninger

The opera Waste Side Story is a collaborative project initiated and organized by the Goethe-Institut, Alt Art Foundation, Romanian National Opera in Cluj-Napoca, and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom, with support from the Department for Interethnic Relations within the Romanian Government.

This performance is part of the Grand Opera Pata Rât project (https://gopr.ro/), a socially engaged art initiative focusing on the self-empowerment of marginalized communities in Pata Rât. It aims to address the Pata-Cluj relationship by leveraging cultural processes to connect and bring people closer, generate reflection and dialogue, create meeting spaces, and mobilize emancipatory social energies.

Grand Opera Pata Rât is funded through the “În Stare de Bine” program, supported by Kaufland Romania and implemented by the Alt Art Foundation, the Goethe-Institut Bucharest, and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom.
