OPERA APERTA INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL 2026

On Thursday, 25 June, at 8:30 PM, the International Opera Aperta Festival 2026 presents Jesus Christ Superstar, the rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber, with lyrics by Tim Rice, on the Main Stage in Unirii Square.

Conceived as a fully sung-through work, Jesus Christ Superstar is inspired by the biblical accounts of the Passion, presented through a modern stage interpretation. The story follows the final days of Jesus, focusing on the tensions between the characters and, in particular, on the perspective of Judas, portrayed as a complex figure caught in an inner conflict over the direction taken by Jesus’ mission.

Through its rock musical language and lyrics that include contemporary references, Jesus Christ Superstar brings the biblical narrative into an expressive framework different from that of classical musical theatre. The work deliberately uses anachronisms, stylistic contrasts, and references to modern sensibilities, allowing for a direct stage approach to themes such as faith, power, and responsibility.

Admission is free.

Recommended age: 7+

The International Opera Aperta Festival is organised with the support of the Ministry of Culture, the Cluj-Napoca City Hall, the Cluj-Napoca Local Council, the Cluj County Council, and the “Opera 2 You” Association.
