Lăsați-mă să cânt by romanian composer Gherase Dendrino (1901-1973) is one of the most significant works of our lyrical national repertoire, its subject recalling the fight for liberation from Habsburg Empire and romanian values search of affirmation. Having the renowed composer Ciprian Porumbescu in the very center of the action that takes place in 1882, around the city of Brasov, makes this work even more captivating. Although his plans of staging Crai Nou premiere face the adversities of the Imperial Authorities, Porumbescu’s perseverance and the community’s support (peasants and intellectuals) will lead, eventually, to victory.
In order to convey musically and dramatically all the aspects of the subject, Gherase Dendrino uses the melodic expressiveness, which proves to be enchanting in the marching moments as in the patriotic songs, round and Transylvanian dances, love songs or waltzes. Many of these highly popular genres of the last century are based on themes and songs created by Ciprian Porumbescu.
The performance has two breaks and ends around 10.30 p.m.
