IL TABARRO (The Cloak)
Opera in one act on libretto by Giuseppe Adami, based on Didier Gold’s La houppelande
SUOR ANGELICA (Sister Angelica)
Opera in one act on a libretto by Giovacchino Forzano
GIANNI SCHICCHI
Opera in one act on a libretto by Giovacchino Forzano, based on one chapter from Dante’s The Divine Comedy
Albeit all the three operas gathered by Puccini’s Il trittico, have no connection, at least at a glimpse (The Cloak renders a real tragedy that took place on the banks of Sena’s, the drama depicted by Suor Angelica happens inside the walls of a monastery, while Gianni Schicchi, centered on the same jester from Dante’s Inferno, has settled throughout the history as one of the mosted notorious buffa operas), each of them reflects instances of the long and universal struggle of man against social iniquity.
Giorgetta from The Cloak is living with the remembrance of the good-old-times when he was living freely the parisian glamour alongside her old friends, while her present existence is offering her, in exchange, an unloving husband, poverty and the boatmen and longshoremen-dominated scenery; after years of isolation, Sister Angelica learns, casually, from her materialistic, unsensitive aunt about her sons’ death – a news that will determine her suicidal gesture; as for Gianni Schicchi – the famous ,,gifted” figure of the 13th Century, an expert in imitating voices and gestures of his co-citizens in Florence, reveals through one charming satire, some of the bourgeoisie’s flaws, such as avidity and materialism.
The great impact of the one-act operas, their stunning subjects are not the only artistic elements that make Puccini’s creation unique, but also their musical background and its verist essence – such an specific feature of the italian composer. Accompanying both tragic comical situations, the vocal and orchestral sonorities build a whole universe waiting to be discovered!
